All-Star Team of Sherpas For Everest is reporting that an All-Star Team of Sherpas have joined forces to summit Everest this Spring in an effort to raise awareness of the critical role that Sherpas play in insuring that the other climbers make it to the summit.

Apa Sherpa will be joined by Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, and four others support memers, when they make their summit bid. Apa Sherpa holds the record for summiting the mountain, having stood on top 16 times, while Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa has set the speed record for a summit, by going up in a mind bending 10 hours, 56 minutes, and 46 seconds.

I’m not sure who all the other teams will be on the mountain come Spring. But my money is on these guys having the best chance of making it to the summit. Call it a hunch. Yeah, I’m good at predicting these things. 😉

  1. Sherpas are incredible, there isn”t really anything more you could say. Countless climbers owe their successful summits to the practically thankless job of the Sherpas. Even more owe their lives to the Sherpas.

While some of the more successful guides and climbing stars get all the kudos and credit in the press… most can’t compare to some of the incredible Sherpa climbers that get very little recognition.

    Underpaid and underappreciated.

  2. Underpaid and Under appreciated is a perfect way to put it. Very few would succeed on Everest, or in the Himalaya in general, without them.

  3. Through this climb, Apa hopes the world will hear the Sherpa story.

Beyond the Summit is the first work to dramatize the lives of Sherpas in fiction. Details of their culture and religion are interwoven in a tale of romance and high adventure. It has something for everyone: a love affair between an American journalist and Sherpa guide, conflict between generations as the modern world challenges centuries of tradition, an Everest expedition from the porter’s point of view.

“Best book on Nepal ever… This is the book to read before you embark on your pilgrimage to Nepal. The author knows and loves the people and the country, and makes you feel the cold thin air, the hard rocks of the mountains, the tough life of the Sherpa guides, and you learn to love them too. This is a higly literate, but also very readable book. Highly recommended.”

This book covers the daily lives of people in the Himalayas. It not even goes beyond the summit but beyond the Shangri_la image often painted by visitors, people in search of spirituality. The story in itself is immensely spiritual but not the circumstances under which life has to take place.
I represent a volunteer organization IPPG (International porter protection group, check us out at […]) that gives high altitude porters a voice and I am depply touched by Linda LeBlanc’s account which is more truth than fiction.
