Le Tour is Underway!

The Tour de France officially got underway today with the Prolog being held in London, England. Todays leg of the Tour was a short, individual time trial to set the order for tomorrow’s leg, which will really get the race underway.

The winner of today’s stage was Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland. Cancellera is the World TIme Trial Champion, and flashed that form today, completing the 4.9 mile course in 8 minutes and 50 seconds, putting him into the Yellow Jersey for at least one day. Andreas Kloeden of Germany was in second place, 13 seconds back, and American George Hincapie finished in third.

Tomorrow’s leg is also in the U.K. and runs from Londres to Canterbury. The 126 mile course winds it’s way across the flat English countryside, favoring the Sprinters who will be looking to gain points towards the Green Jersey.

This quick prolog just sets the stage. Tomorrow the Tour gets properly underway. It’s a long way to the Champs-Elysées and it’s a wide open this year. It should be fun to watch, even as a cloud hovers over the event. There isn’t even a rider wearing the traditional Number 1 this year. One thing’s for certain, all bets are off on this year’s Tour.

  1. Hi Matt! It looks like the Tour should be fun to follow this year, with so many contenders. Can’t wait to see how it plays out. Of course, I think it’s ok to pass on the Prolog in order to “tour” the Cascades. 🙂
