50 Top Adventure Towns from Adventure

september
I guess it’s time for another list of the top “adventure cities” in the United States, this time coming from National Geographic Adventure. This online preview is for the new issue coming out next week, but it gives away their top spots in a number of different categories, including Top Wilderness Towns, Top Small Towns, and Top Mountain Towns.

They cover areas from all over the country, and their definition of “town” may be a bit over blown, but there are some great locations recommended here, including my city of Austin, TX sneaking on to the list for “Top Waterfront Towns”. I can attest to the plethora of outdoor activities that can be done year round with in a short drive of Austin.

The magazine article, which hits newsstands on August 14th, will go into more detail on each of the locations, and should make for a fun read if you’re considering re-locating to add a little adventure to your life. The towns really are well spread out across the country and should offer activities and scenery for anyone into the outdoors.

Their #1 Adventure Town came as a bit of surprise to me though. Usually you’ll find Boulder, Colorado topping most of these lists, but this time out, it’s Las Vegas, Nevada. They note that “Hikers, mountain bikers, and rock climbers have discovered a backcountry playground just beyond Sin City’s limits.” That makes Vegas sound like some kind of Utopian Paradise! I mean, you get the action on the Strip, gambling, shows, and legalized prostitution, while still enjoying the great outdoors! What’s not to love? 😉
