Small Towns, Big Adventures

While browsing the USA TOday website earlier, I came across this article in their Travel section.

It’s a list of ten great small towns across the United States that offer excellent outdoor adventures. The cities are spread out, so there is something fairly close to anywhere in the country that you might live with a whole range of options for outdoor activities. For instance, Salida, Colorado makes the list for it’s paddling options, which include running the Arkansas River and two white water parks.

But there are also 15 14,000 foot peaks within easy driving distance as well. Lake Placid, New York gets a mention for the lake itself, but also some excellent hiking in the Adirondack Mountains that surround the city. Boone, North Carolina offers trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains and great hiking, climbing, and mountain biking in Pigsah National Forest.

There are plenty of other suggestions as well, so as the dog days of Summer begin to wind down, and you’re looking for one last escape for the season, you may find an unexpected playground much closer than you think.

  1. I’ve been to Ely, MN which is also on the list and can vouch for it as well. No white water, but some very pleasant places to paddle a canoe or go for a hike.
