A quick update this morning from K2Climb.net. Kazakhs Maxut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov spent another night in the Death Zone after gaining just 100 meters climbing yesterday. They left their “assault camp” at 8300m and after a full day of climbing, up a challenging rock face, they had only gained 100m, where they pitched another tent to rest through the night.
Today, they’re hoping to make their final summit bid. All other climbers are off the mountain, so it’s just these two legends alone against K2. Time is running out for them however, as another day in the Death Zone will likely force them to come down. Yesterday they fixed 200 meters more of rope and reports say they have only a short, but challenging pitch yet to go before reaching the summit.
With any luck they’ll top out today. I’ll post more as it comes in.
