So? Did anyone see Into The Wild?

I know this past weekend was when it was suppose to go into “wide release”, but it’s still only playing in 135 theaters. Not exactly what I’d call a wide release. Needless to say, it still hasn’t come to Austin, TX, which is one of the best movie towns in the entire country. We actually have a very good, thriving film community here, not to mention the best theater in the country.

I checked the listings over the weekend, and was disappointed to find that it wasn’t playing anywhere near me yet. If you’ve been one of the lucky ones who’ve had a chance to see it, be sure to post your thoughts in the “Comments” section. I’m really interested in hearing your impressions.

  1. I did get a chance to see it this weekend. However, it wasn’t in the city I live either, I actually had to drive about 45 minutes- but with that said, it was worth it. The filming was great, it seemed to follow the book well, and it really put a voice I guess on the people mentioned in the novel. I don’t think it was at all overdone but it was very emotional. I do think though that it sort of played up the idea that McCandless was, I don’t know, someone who was perfectly fine in what he was doing. I’m also of the group that is very inspired by his ideas and the dream he was chasing but I think he should have been more prepared. But, I guess that wouldn’t have been part of the dream now would it?

  2. Our paper (Anchorage Daily News, http://www.adn.com) has put out a 2 part piece yesterday and today (Sun/Mon) on ITW. Includes views on McCandless, the attraction around it all, investigating the true reason he died, and the movie.

  3. Thanks for your thoughts azzfan. Always appreciated. And like you, I think I feel the same about McCandless. I admire his “dream” but cringe at how ill prepared he was.

Beck: Thanks for the link. I’ll take a look at the article and post some thoughts on it later.

  4. 498Nope, still not playing here and i’m actually kind annoyed about it. With all the hype (big articles in Outside, Adventure, Nightline piece, talk show circuit) it is highly annoying that they chose to go with such a limited release for the movie before expanding slowly.

  5. Totally agree Carl. I thought that it was suppose to be in “wide release” this past weekend. For me, that means more than 135 theaters. I don’t expect it to play on 3000+ screens like Spider-Man, but I would have thought that someone in my area would have it on one screen.

I guess I’ll wait until next week now.

  6. I am a little upset too. I was ready to go see the film Friday night, and guess what. It’s not playing in my area either. It’s playing in a theater about 1 1/2 hours away from where I am, but that makes it a 6 hour ordeal, not including the gas money I’d spend and ozone killing I’d be doing.

Guess I’ll wait and see if it comes to the Nashville, Southern Ky area…
