Primal Quest To Return In 2012?!?!

Today has been an interesting day. While working away to catch-up on a variety of deadlines, I received a fantastic text from Don Mann, the race director behind the legendary Primal Quest adventure races, and my boss for the past two PQ’s which took place in 2008 and 2009. The text simply read:

“Hello Kraig. Would you be interested in doing another PQ in 2012?”

Of course, my emphatic and immediate response was YES!

While the details are still very light, I can tell you that it looks like PQ will be back next year, with a seven day race, to be held somewhere in the Western United States. I know that’s not much, but I promise to share more when I get more details myself.

This is, of course, great news for adventure racers, who not only have another fantastic race to look forward to, they’ll also get to compete in one of the truly legendary events in the history of the sport. A word to the wise however, you had better start training now, as everything you’ve heard about the difficulty of the PQ courses is true, and I’m sure that Don Mann will be coming back strong next year.

I can’t wait!

  1. Also a great choice, provided there is room for two in that region. Expedition Idaho is going to do an excellent job there.

  2. I agree, but they were looking for PQ in 09. I do know that they are going to have a great DVD of the race later.

  3. Boom-Shaka-Laka…this is huge. Any official word from Don on FB or anywhere? This race will contrast sharply with the little orienteering meet, "everyone gets to finish" type "AR" trend. LOVE IT! Bring back the Gnarly, dream-crushing point A to Z Mission: Impossible, Don!

  4. Sean: This is about as official as you're going to get for now. Don gave me permission to float the story and that means this is further along than just an idea, but more details aren't ready yet.

I'm guessing we'll hear a lot more soon. And you're right, Don will bring the pain! 🙂

  5. I'm right there with you. My entire weekend was better just hearing this news. Can't wait for the return of the legend!

  6. And the Kiwis are ready! Looking forward to be back with Don and the team , worked on them all since Tahoe , nothing compares!!

  7. Awesome Sean! We'll see you there!

Bring your best Kiwi teams too, I know there are more than a few down there! 😉

  8. Great news! Northern New Mexico or Washington (can you say paddle heavy?) would be incredible too, but we're in anywhere!

  9. I know where Don is making his first pitch, but can't say anything yet. I'll announce the location here as soon as I'm allowed. Might be some time yet, lots of wheels in motion.

  10. Fire up the airplane and dust off the gear bin. Long ride from Singapore to the race start but wouldn't miss it for anything! PRAISE B 2 D DON!

  11. Washington has been done, but northern New Mexico would be gnarly! And close to my house – so convenient!

  12. I was a finisher in Primal Quest 2006 and I can tell you it was the most amazing thing I've ever done. I'm starting to organize another team now..

  13. Just me – I've been a volunteer since Telluride PQ 1. I hope I can save up enough leave hours at my new job before the race so I can come!
