Reminder: Vote For The Nat Geo Adventurer Of The Year

Just a quick reminder that you only have a few days left to cast your votes for the 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will close on Wednesday of this week (January 18) with the winner being announced in a few weeks time.

In case you have forgotten who the nominees are, you can meet all the adventurers, and get a rundown of their amazing accomplishments, by clicking here. And after you’ve selected your favorites, you can cast your vote (once per day!) by clicking here.

I’m not going to reveal my personal pick for Adventurer of the Year, but I can tell you that this is a particularly strong group of candidates. I also like that they represent a variety of outdoor pursuits ranging from mountaineering to paddling to long distance hiking, and more. This diversity makes it even more challenging to select one overall, which is why it has been great that we can vote more than once!

It should be fun to see who ends up coming out on top.

  1. I voted for the two Sherpa's. What Cory did is totally badass, but willingness to endure extreme risk and suffering is not the same as "adventure". The term to me, embodies the qualities of "not knowing", of "discovery", which floating down the Ganges has.

Also, in my book at least, a great adventure should put a smile on one's face rather than the look of near death.

  2. My vote goes to Alistair Humphreys. I think his project to find 'everyday adventures' in your own backyard is an outstanding idea. There will always be extreme athletes pushing the limits of human endurance, but I think encouraging a more grassroots oriented 'adventure-lite' culture among ordinary people is wonderful. Maybe some will be inspired to become the next grand explorer, but even if they aren't the more people we have out enjoying the wilderness, the better. People are always more inspired to protect what they love.
