Video: So Why Do Adventurer Racers Do The Things They Do?

Ever wonder what drives the best adventure racers in the world to competing in those grueling events? Then you’ll probably want to check out this beautiful video below as it not only chats with some of the athletes, but it features some stunning imagery of them doing their thing in some of the most amazing places on the planet. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know I have mad respect for these endurance athletes, most of whom are just looking for an excuse to go play in the backcountry once in awhile. Adventure racing is that excuse.

  1. I adventure race because I want to de-huminize myself into the animal I was born to be. The human-being is the only animal that has the mental capacity for self-pity. An adventure racer has to mentally break through the wall of self-loathing to be successful in this sport. I know that physiologically, humans are the fastest land animals in the world. The arch in the human foot mirrors the mathematical genius of Roman construction. Before asphalt roads and shoes with debilitating cushioning, mankind evolved to run hundreds of miles every day in the pursuit of survival. Endurance is the humans’ superior weapon and running is how we use it to survive. Adventure racing is a culmination of all the primitive abilities of endurance survival. The challenge of adventure racing forces the participants to de-evolve into the endurance animals we were born to be while working as a cooperative tribe. And…. I race because I dig beer and burgers and doing this demanding sport allows for ravenous post-race carb and calorie intake.

  2. I had to post up on Facebook as well. Another great post from you that echoes out with why we do what we do out there…
    Thanks Kraig,
