Adventure Quickies: Patagonia Upgrades Black Hole Bags, Win $5K of 4X4 Gear, and More!

Each week there are far too many gear, adventure travel, and exploration stories to share in the limited time and space that I have. To help rectify that, I try to wind things down on a Friday with a rundown of some of the things we might have missed elsewhere. These “Adventure Quickies” are meant to offer a brief intro to topic and some links where you can find out more. So to that end, here’s what was happening this week in the world of outdoor adventure:

  • Patagonia Classic Black Hole Bags Now 100% Recycled: Patagonia’s line of Black Hole bags –– which includes travel packs, duffels, and tots –– has been a staple in the company’s line-up for years. Now, these fantastic pieces of gear get an upgrade worthy of the Patagonia name, as moving forward they will be 100% recycled, using 10 million plastic bottles in their construction.
  • Win $5000 in 4×4 Off-Road Gear: Do you prefer your adventures take place off road and in a motorized vehicle? Is rock crawling one of your favorite pastimes? If you’ve answered yes to those questions, you might want to head over to to enter its latest contest. You’ll get the chance to win a custom shopping experience for Jeep, Tacoma, and Tundra owners worth up to $5000.
  • Paddle Boarder Travels From Minnesota to Arctic Canada: Adventurer Jared Munch has just completed an epic 37-day journey from Duluth, Minnesota to James Bay in Northern Canada. What’s the big deal you ask? He did it on a stand-up paddle board. ExWeb has the full story.
  • Join the Great Kiwi Escape for a Bike Ride of a Lifetime: If you’re already looking ahead to possible adventures to embark upon in 2020, be sure to add the Great Kiwi Escape to your list of potential excursions. This amazing cycling trip takes places from April 18-26, and sends riders off on a stunning excursion across New Zealand’s South Island. Beginning in Queenstown and ending in Christchurch, you’ll get a chance to experience everything that the land of the Kiwi has to offer. It promises to be an amazing experience, top to bottom.
  • Kai Lenny Becomes Youngest to Enter Surfer’s Hall of Fame: What does it take to be inducted into the hall of fame of your chosen sport but the age of 26? You’ll have to ask surfer Kai Lenny, because he is now the youngest person to ever be inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame.
  • Corporate Execs Discover Impact of Plastic on Ocean During Sailing Adventure: If there is one way to get corporate execs to start to understand the impact that microplastics are having on the oceans, it’s to take them out to witness it first hand. That’s exactly what an adventure sailing company called SoulBuffalo did, and Outside has the complete scoop on what happened next.
  • Duer Celebrates 5th Anniversary by Giving Away a Trip to Vietnam: Duer has been one of the leaders in making stretch-denim pants for use by climbers, hikers, and other outdoor athletes. In fact, the company has now been around for five years, and to celebrate that milestone its sending one lucky fan (and a guest!) on an amazing 11-day adventure to hike, bike, and paddle their way across Vietnam. All you have to do to enter is fill out the form found here.
  • 15,000 Corvettes Descend on Bowling Green, KY: Bowling Green, Kentucky is the home of the Chevy Corvette, one of the most storied and beloved sports cars in the world. To celebrate that status more than 15,000 of the vehicles will descend on the city on Labor Day Weekend this year. The 6th National Corvette Caravan will take place from August 26-31, ending in BG, just in time to welcome the new 2020 mid-engine Corvette Stingray to the line-up.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back soon with more Adventure Quickies to share.
