The Manitou Incline in Colorado is an infamous hiking trail. The route, which is often simply called “The Incline,” gains more than 2000 feet (609 meters) over the course of a single mile (1.6 km), making it a lung-bursting, leg-cramping climb. Those who do undertake this challenging ascent are treated to spectacular views along the way, provided they have the wherewithal to appreciate them. Naturally, this legendary trail has drawn quite a bit of attention from runners and endurance athletes, who have built a community around the mix of pain and pleasure that they derive from the brutal path. This video takes us inside that relationship and helps us to understand it on a deeper level. As usual with these kinds of endeavors, you’ll either get the attraction or will be totally baffled by it.
