At more than 55-feet in length and weighing in excess of 37 tons, the Snow Cruiser was a massive and powerful vehicle built to explore Antarctica in the 1930s. In fact, this incredible feat of engineering was designed and made for Richard E. Byrd’s Third Antarctic Expedition and was expected to help map the mostly unexplored Frozen Continent.
Unfortunately, the big machine didn’t live up to its billing and ended up not working as promised. This video gives us the history behind the Snow Cruiser and explores what ultimately happened to this vehicle, which is now relegated to being just a footnote in exploration history.
