Upcoming Movie North Face Set To Wash Vertical Limit From Our Minds

Mountaineering films have had a long and storied history in cinema, some good, some not so good. But when I came across this trail for a German film called North Face this morning on the Outside Blog, I couldn’t help but be impressed. The film centers around two climbers taking on the North Face of the Eiger in an era when national pride could rest on the shoulders of mountaineers. The film looks beautifully shot, and appears to have faithfully recreated a climbing experience during the Nazi era. Screenings for the film are fairly sparse at the moment, but perhaps they’ll add more opportunities for all of us to catch this. Otherwise, there is always Netflix! Looks great!

  1. I haven't watched alot of mountaineering movies, but I'll make a plan watching this one and measure it against my fav mountaineering movie, Touching the Void

  2. Looks interesting. Watching the trailer, I assumed the movie is about the 1938 first successful ascent of the Eiger north face, but since climbers appear to perish, I now suspect it is about the 1936 attempt in which 2 Germans and 2 Austrians died.

  3. I have watched the movie a couple of mounts ago and I can honestly say North Face is one of the best mountaineering movies out there. I wont compare it to Touching the Void, because it is different.

It's about the 1936 climb and most of the movie is sticking to the true story (except *something* at the end).

Good climbing and no unreal hollywood action.

    9.5 out of 10!

  4. Thanks for the review! It's great that you've already seen it. Sounds like a winner. Can't wait to check it out for myself.
